How does CBD oil make you feel?

There are many people who feel apprehensive about trying CBD oil because of the stigma surrounding recreational cannabis. How does CBD oil make you feel – will it make me feel high? Will it make me sluggish, lazy, and/or unconcerned? And, most importantly, is it unsafe?

The short answer to all of these questions is no – so long as it is medical grade and prescribed appropriately under the guidance of a qualified healthcare professional. CA Connect provides a legal access pathway to pharmaceutical-grade CBD that has been tested for quality and contaminants. To see if you are eligible for CBD oil, start here.

CBD oil is used for its therapeutic properties. It does not provide the high or sense of euphoria associated with recreational cannabis (which contains THC), it is unlikely to impede your day-to-day activities, and, in addition, research has found medical grade CBD to have a ‘favourable safety profile.’

In this article, we will delve into these questions further and learn what effects patients should anticipate.

What is CBD oil?

CBD oil is composed of two elements: a dilution of a carrier oil (such as MCT, hemp seed oil, avocado oil, or coconut oil) and an extract of CBD.

CBD is one of the many cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. Another well-known compound in the cannabis plant is delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Whilst coming from the same plant, CBD and THC have different effects.

THC is the most active constituent of cannabis and has a psychological effect. It creates a mind-altering “high” when a person smokes or inhales it or uses it in cooking. This is because THC breaks down when a person applies heat and introduces it into the body.

So how does CBD oil make you feel when you take it?

CBD, in contrast, is not psychoactive. It does not change a person’s state of mind when they use it and make you feel “high”. Instead, it,can offer significant medical benefits. A broad range of anecdotal reports and scientific studies have supported the argument that CBD can be a suitable adjunct therapy in treating a variety of mental and physical disorders which conventional therapies have failed to manage effectively.

What are the benefits of CBD?

Multiple studies are highlighting CBD’s effectiveness in helping with various issues including chronic pain, unstable sleep, anxiety, and depression.

A recent trial reported CBD significantly lessened chronic pain and the need for opioid medications. This is due to CBD’s ability to influence the endocannabinoid system, reducing pain signals and inflammation that leads to pain.

CBD has also been found to promote signals in the nervous system and up-regulates endocannabinoids that help us to relax and initiate sleep.

Additionally, by modulating the stress reactivity as well as chemical signals in the brain such as anandamide, serotonin, and dopamine, CBD has the potential to help reduce anxiety.

While research into medical cannabis and CBD could benefit from more clinical trials, the breadth of studies is vast. Some other conditions where CBD may help include:

  • Mood disorder: CBD oil may help people with Schizophrenia, Depression or PTSD by improving connectivity in the brain or regulating pathways involved in the stress response and processing of fearful memories.

Due to such a phenomenal backlog of scientific evidence, medical experts are investing time and resources in researching more into the health benefits of CBD.

How long does it take for the effects of CBD to kick in?

As detailed above, CBD can be prescribed for a wide range of medical conditions and issues. Therefore, the speed at which the effects are felt depend on what you are using the medication to treat, what dose you are taking, what other medications you may be taking, and a number of potential other factors that you can discuss with your CA Connect healthcare practitioner.

For some people, CBD oil can take 30-90 minutes to take effect, for others it might take days or even weeks before they feel the therapeutic impact of CBD. And for some patients, they may feel no discernible positive effects of CBD. If that is the case, please contact CA Connect to discuss.

Treatments provided through CAConnect take place under the supervision of a pharmacist and healthcare team, ensuring that your prescription is tailored to try to meet your needs.

How long do the effects of CBD last?

Everyone is different, but there are a number of factors that play into the longevity of CBD’s therapeutic effects.

One of these is body weight. Since CBD is stored in your body’s fat, if you have less body fat, your body will not store as much CBD and processes the substance much faster, shortening the length of the effects.

On the other hand, if you have a lot of body fat, you might experience a longer duration of CBD effects because your body could take longer to process it.

Another factor is your lifestyle. If you have an active lifestyle, CBD could be processed through your body faster. Whereas if you lead a more sedentary lifestyle, perhaps catalysed by long hours at a desk job, the effects of CBD may persist longer than usual.

One other factor is diet. Consuming CBD oil on an empty stomach can lead to a stronger effect and, as you’ve probably guessed, a full stomach can mitigate the effects.

Will CBD oil make you feel high?

One of the most common misconceptions surrounding CBD therapies is that they can make you feel high.

And as mentioned in the introduction, CBD oil cannot give you the same high as recreational cannabis with THC. CBD doesn’t have intoxicating properties. It can make you feel calm and relaxed, but these effects aren’t even close to what you get from consuming so-called “marijuana”.

CBD oil may contain faint traces of the psychoactive compound THC, but it is unlikely to have an intoxicating effect as long as the CBD product contains less than 0.3% THC. Which leads us to our next point: the importance of obtaining high quality medical grade CBD from a legal prescriber or pharmacy.

What do studies say about the quality of CBD?

It’s crucial to acquire your CBD products through legal pathways in Australia for quality assurance, despite the temptation to buy CBD from online vendors without prescription.

A 2017 American study found that out of 84 products tested, ‘26% contained less CBD than labelled, which could negate any potential clinical response.’

Another study from the States found significant inaccuracies in CBD labelling. 42.8% of CBD products contained less than the labelled amount and 26.1% over-reported the CBD quantity.

Black market vendors are rarely transparent when providing information that concerns the nature of production and often lack basic outlines of the international supply chain, including important details such as farming and extraction methods, as well as product testing.

This leaves consumers at risk of buying a poor quality product, which may contain contaminants such as heavy metals, pesticides, insecticides or bacteria, and could do more harm than good. Ambiguities such as these result in a risk of reduced safety, quality, and efficacy.

CA Connect provides legal access to pharmaceutical-grade CBD that has been tested for quality and contaminants. We provide comprehensive care and ensure that the product you receive is of the highest quality.

Are there any negative side effects of CBD to consider?

A comprehensive review of over 100 studies found that, ‘in general, the often described favourable safety profile of CBD in humans was confirmed and extended by the reviewed research.’

In this review, the most commonly reported side effects were tiredness, diarrhoea, and changes in appetite/weight.

‘In comparison with other drugs used for the treatment of these medical conditions, CBD has a better side effect profile.’

The only other notable risk is CBD’s interaction with other drugs. One study identified broad drug-drug interactions with several agents, including inducer and inhibitor of CYP3A4 or CYP2C19.

When you do your virtual consult with CA Connect, we will ask you about your medical history and what other drugs you are taking so you can be assessed for any potentially negative drug-drug interactions.
